Some of us can easily smell a liar, while some of us have a hard time reading people. It would be easy for us if a person lying just grows a nose just like Pinocchio. If it is just that simple, it would make the world a better place because people will be discouraged when they want to tell a lie. But we don’t live in a fairy tale and sadly there are people who are good at lying. I have compiled some techniques from experts who give tips on how to spot a liar.

Reading someone is easy if you observe carefully. It is a big help to know how to interpret people’s movements and voice changes. First, try to evaluate how someone normally talks. Ask normal questions you know the answers to, such as “What is your full name?” or “Where are you from?” Continue asking this kind of questions until you know what type of talker the person is, and then shift to questions you don’t know the answer to. If the way he talks changes suddenly, there’s a possibility that he is telling a lie.

Another way to tell if a person is not telling the truth is when he appears to have perfectly practiced what he is about to say. When a person is asked and there is no uncertainty to what he is going to answer or the person does not pause to think for a while, that is usually a dead giveaway. This is more common for kids and teenagers who usually can’t elaborate more on a story.

If a person fidgets or moves around uneasily, chances are that person is telling a lie. Guilt and anxiety usually makes a person restless. This is mainly true for people who lie to someone they love. If a wife is lying to her husband, she usually fidgets or fusses a lot.

People who are lying frequently use phrases that accentuate the authenticity of what they are saying, such as “to be perfectly honest” or “I solemnly swear to God”. Most people who are telling the truth know that they don’t need to go that far. If they are telling the truth, they just know that there is no need for phrases such as “with God as my witness” or similar phrases.
