WisdomMan and Nature: Gifts in the Hands of Man
Man is not only dependent on nature, but is also highly sensitive and vulnerable to natural phenomena. In primitive times, when lightning flashed and and thunders roared, man cowered in his cave as mountains reverberated to such fearful sounds. Heavy rains come that usually caused disastrous floods, primitive men flee to higher grounds. Earthquake relentlessly shook the Earth and primitive man prayed to his god for salvation from a seemingly world-ending disaster for him. Nature can destroy but it can also be a generous friend. And if nature can destroy man, man can also destroy nature as what he is currently doing all over the world. Man has his hands dirty on the potential destruction of nature by the technology he created for his greater convenience in life. Whether it is conscious or not, this defiant act of destroying a life giving planet is regrettable and must not be allowed to continue. Man must act and act now to retain the life-giving and sustaining forces which are inherent in nature. Josh Ruskin, a great English writer, once said that we were given three precious gifts. These are pure air, water, and earth. We do not know how to live until we enjoy these. Ruskin continues that we are polluting these very same gifts by our manner of life. Everywhere, all day long we are polluting them with toxic exhalations rising into heavens as venomous smokes and smells, that could very well slowly kills us in the long run. Ruskin added that our powers over rain, river-water, and other bodies of water is infinite. Man can bring rain where he will by planting wisely and careful tending. In direct contrast, man can also bring drought by the destruction of the very flora in forests and neglect of soil. We might have our rivers pure as the crystal in rock - beautiful in falls, in lakes, and living pools. But what are we doing? We are turning such life-giving bodes of water into common sewers. Even the rain that once flourish the land falls on us dirty. Each was meant to be nourishing to us, providing convenience to human life, but our scientific brains have invented explosives producing death instead of proliferation of life.
