Reading is learning by discovery. Why should you read? You read to be informed, to gain knowledge, and to enjoy. But to meet these goals, you must read effectively. There are four levels of reading. Each part is a part of the rest.

Basic reading involves putting together phonetics into words, words into phrases, phrases into sentences, and sentences into paragraphs. At this level, you learn words and paragraphs. At this level, you learn words and recognize their meanings. As you read more, you recognize thoughts in phrases or group of words. Only when you read thought units will you be able to grasp what a sentence means.

Systematic skimming or pre-reading aims to get a general view of the contents by going through the title page, table of contents, index, cover flaps, important chapters, and selected pages. Not all books are good books. Skimming helps you screen the books available for reading.

Next is the analytical reading. This requires you to classify what you read. Is it fiction or non-fiction and other important matters about the subject matter you’re reading. In this phase you analyze and evaluate what you read. React to the view expounded in the book. Also, you interpret what you read in terms of your own experience.

Lastly is the intensive reading phase. This involves reading more than one book on a particular subject and comparing the contents discussed. Most books recommend other books for reading. Get or borrow a copy of some of these recommended books and scan them. The author leads you to other books, encouraging you to read more and expand your knowledge of the subject you are interested in.

The more you use these four levels of reading, the better will be your comprehension. You don’t have to be a genius to enjoy reading. Books are not limited to your academic subjects. There are hundreds of books on travel, sports, hobbies, fashion and people. There are books which aim to make you laugh and books which aim to make you think more deeply. Reading can influence your life! Find out now. As Francis Bacon wrote, “reading maketh a full man.”
