Studying 101: Diligence - It Pays Off

The Webster dictionary defines the word diligence as a constant, steady effort to accomplish a task. When a person is described as diligent, then that person is viewed as an industrious, careful and steadily attentive individual. Responsibilities, quality work and perseverance come to mind when we talk of diligence. Part of life’s responsibilities is the wise use of given opportunities. Not everybody can go to school and learn. There are many people out there who want to study but lack the resources to do so. Some may look for part-time jobs to be able to study. For others who want to learn, schools are either too far or there are not enough teachers. If you are enrolled in a school, be thankful and make out the most of your student life.

Be a responsible student. Attend your classes regularly; carefully do your readings and home work; submit complete requirements promptly; study well for quizzes and exams. They are your basic “ought-to’s”. Invest your time and effort wisely in these routine tasks. Routine is the regular rhythm of life. It trains you to be steady and sturdy. In this era of “instants” and mass production, most people choose speed and quantity over quality and craftsmanship. Many students rush through school work without thinking of the quality of their final output. In so doing they lose the essence of learning. To profit from education, there must be quality in learning. Quality cannot be gained overnight. You can only obtain it when you aim to achieve it by working hard.

How can you begin to achieve quality, start by reading and re-reading your textbook until you have a clear idea of your lesson. Submit accurate and well-prepared papers whether they are long or just a one-paragraph thought. Also, don’t give up on baffling math problems given as homework or seat work. You can also do thinking and re-thinking your answers and opinions before expressing them during classroom discussions.

Quality in learning means reviewing your lessons, and revising your written assignments, and improving your thinking patterns. The more you improve your work, the more you are improved not only as a student but an improved as an individual as well.
