After you have known what are the barriers in being socially involved in college and after you’ve known the ways on how to overcome them, the next thing to do is to find ways on how to get involved. Being socially active and involved in your school is a great way to gain experience and gain friends. There are many ways to get involved and here are some tips on your way out to social passivity: Share what you know. If you’re good in Math, offer to help your classmate who is poor in this subject. You might like to organize a study-support group.

For instance, when your professor assigns long-reading, split up the work of reading and summarizing among the study-group members. Each member takes a topic or chapter, sums up the main points and then provides copies with other members. Draw the line of teamwork, however, when doing exercises and seat works and when taking quizzes and exams. Absolutely no sharing at these times. Join a co-curricular activity in your school. Be a member of a school club and nurture your interest, develop your abilities, strengthen your confidence, widen your experience, and gain more friends. Sign up with the club which caters your interests.

But remember to balance your involvement; don’t join too many co-curricular activities and neglect your studies. Get involved in issues affecting society. Write letters to editors of newspapers. Your printed letter will draw public attention and awareness to specific cases of evil, unlawful practices, injustices, health hazards, or environmental dangers in your community. Spearhead charitable projects in your school. Whether it be for the poor, the sick, mentally retarded, the aged, the orphaned. Schedule visits to the needy and offer your gifts of food, toys, clothes and medicine. When you care enough to minister to others, you unselfishly give of yourself.

What is involvement? It is participation, activity, not passivity - effort versus complacency. It is interest, caring and concern rather than indifference and unconcern. Involvement is more than existing; it is being alive because it is interaction with people. Involvement is the relationship element that keeps you in touch with the people. It lets you make a difference where you are. So, step out of your shell and be socially active.
