The term paper is a major requirement in college. It could either make or break your grade. Also, term paper holds a major stake in your semestral grade. As such, it should be done with proper planning and preparation. Here are some tips to ace your term paper: Choose a specific topic for your paper. When your professor gives you the freedom to choose, select the one topic that interests you, which you can handle, which you can finish on a given deadline and which has available research sources. Limit your topic and pick an approach. After choosing a topic, lay down your objectives and state your problem. These will keep you on track. The objectives also serve as a checklist when you have completed your research. They will show whether or not you have covered all points raised at the start of the paper. Prepare a working bibliography. Visit the library and skim through the subject cards for possible reference. Always consider the books available in the library even though there is vast information available in the Internet. Information on books tends to be more reliable. Construct a tentative outline. Skim the headings and sub-headings of the books, periodicals and internet sources in your working bibliography. From here, extract ideas for your working outline. The outline is a tool that reminds you to include all sides of the subject under discussion. It guides you to link one topic to another. It gives balance, coherence and organization to your paper. Read and take notes. Be selective. Always ask: “Do I need this information on my paper?” avoid copying word for word. Be thorough and careful with details. This will save you from doing the same job twice. Finalize, and then tighten your outline and notes. Ask yourself: “Did I cover everything? Are my research data well balanced? Do the sections overlap? Do I have illustrations and statistics to support my arguments?” if your research is weak, beef up the data with additional significant information, not just any information. Organize and write the paper. When all the needed research has been completed, arrange your note cards according to topics dictated by the final outline. Then begin to write and link the topics together. The bulk of your work will have been accomplished by your outline and notes, if they were done well in the first place. All you have to add are introductory words, transitional phrasings, and concluding punches. Consult term paper manuals. It gives guidelines on format, presentation of the title page, table of contents, appendices and glossary. Check also for the consistency of footnotes and end-notes. Footnotes are at the bottom of a page, while end-notes are placed at the end of the chapters. Both serve to indicate where specific information can be found. Ask your teacher for preferences. Ask the professor regarding the presentation format, margin specifications, typing guidelines and other matters as well. Extensive planning on how to do a term paper is needed for you to ace that research paper. Just make sure that you are also prepared on your oral defense as well. Ace the paper and ace the defense and get a grade which is truly rewarding. You can talk about... Studying 101: Ace that Term Paper!
