School life is not all about academics. It is not just about facing books and lectures but it is all about meeting new people as well. Learning is not accomplished only through individual activity. Involvement in the activities of the class, of the school, as well as of society can add to your experience, broaden your education, and deepen your insights in life as well. But what stops the majority of students from getting involved? Some barriers include shyness, laziness and selfishness.

Shyness is caused by brooding too much on what people think and say about you. You tend to be bothered with inferior thoughts of yourself. When your classmates or teachers criticize or laugh at you, it does not diminish your worth as a person. Remember there are so called constructive criticism that will make you improve your personality as well. What’s really important is how you see and accept yourself. God made us all unique and everyone is special. To overcome this, spend time in knowing yourself- your strengths and weaknesses. Develop your strong points and take steps to improve your weaknesses. This leads to a healthier self-image.

Laziness causes many students to remain uninvolved in class, school and community activities. A definite lack of effort masks the work of these students. Some students live only for the brief and transient moments of fun-filled times. The only antidote to laziness is hard work. Choose to be like the far-thinking ant rather than the short-sighted grasshopper. Life is a matter of play now and regret later or work now and profit later. You either build bridges or better relationships now, or be walled up in loneliness later. What you sow, what you reap.

Selfishness, another barrier to overcome, is too much of putting oneself first. A self-centered student does things mainly for what he/she can get out of it. He ignores the feelings and well-being of other people. He gets involved in class and school activities or even social causes primarily to feed his own ego. Rarely are his motives altruistic. Selfishness also shows indifference. The selfish student refuses to get involvement. Remember to always be an active student rather than a passive and quiet student.

Involvement is not a minus; it is a plus. Get involved in the classroom. Be friendly towards our classmates and schoolmates and enjoy the rewards of relating. Let your name be heard in a good manner. Inspire other students to get involved as well. Don’t start later, start now!
