Read different forms of reading materials. There is indeed a variety of reading materials for you to choose from, like books, comics, magazines, newspapers, etc. This is where your comprehension of English language is well-tested because compared to watching, you do not have the actions and gestures as give-away clues. You are to depend only in your previous learning and understanding of English. It gives you an idea how to organize your thoughts and express your self using English words since it gives you the practical application of the language. This is also a way in which you get to meet more difficult words that you do not usually encounter in normal conversations. It manifests your ability to learn even in the midst of mundane activities like reading a newspaper. You do not only get well-informed with what’s latest, you also get well-educated. These are just some of the healthy benefits that you can get out of reading.

Have a handy dictionary. Dictionary is truly a wonderful investment. It is wise for you to secure a pocket dictionary or a thesaurus for yourself. At times, while reading or watching, you stumble upon words that will catch your attention because you simply do not understand them. When you have an opportunity to grab the meaning of those words, do not just rely on context clues –it is good but you should do more than that. Sometimes, context clues can mislead you especially when you are reading novels and paperbacks. Also, it helps to have a list of those unfamiliar words, and look for their meanings afterwards. Make sure to go over the text where you have found your “word” so that you’ll have a better comprehension of it. You can also surf the internet for websites that enables you to have free downloads of dictionary softwares. These are great aids in apprehending words since most of their features include definition, pronunciation, synonyms and antonyms.

Practice what you have learned. Consistent practice ensures the success of all your hardships in learning English. You must be able to write correctly and speak eloquently. You can start by doing monologues or by talking to yourself. When you’re confident enough, include the English language in your daily life, particularly when you’re communicating with other people either through direct or written conversation. Also, since we are in the height of social media, it doesn’t hurt to post your status and messages in English, just be sure to have a grammar check first.
