Efficient and effective learning does not necessarily depend on the amount of time devoted to study. A student may spend as much as four to five hours studying lessons but have actually completed only two hours’ worth of work. One may have read and re-read an assigned chapter for two hours but still fail to grasp the essence of the material. But how could this be? What’s wrong? The truth is the number of hours is not what counts. You may have worked only for two hours but have actually finished three to four hours’ worth of learning. What makes the difference is how much you put into these hours. Your degree of concentration determines the quality of your completed work. Concentration is focusing your mind. It develops your mental muscles of stamina, tenacity and absorption. The more you concentrate, the more information can be absorbed. You can deliberately direct your mind to something and keep it focused with intensity like a spotlight. You can hang on a particular problem until you have solved it. You can refuse to have unfinished business. You can isolate or close your mind from all sorts of distractions. Concentration gives you control over yourself and the environment. With this, you can tackle work wherever and whenever. There is no need for a right time or right place. Learning can take place in a crowded room, in a noisy environment- in surrounding which you never thought could be a conducive place to study. As long as you are focused, you can learn. Strengthen your concentration and the bridle the direction of your thoughts. When you catch yourself mentally wandering from a reading or lecture or discussion, rein in your errant thoughts and set them on the right track again. Daydreams- you can reset to other to other less demanding times. Indulge in them after work has been done. Or translate your more realistic daydreams into goals and pursue them. Indeed, you can practice the art of making your mind behave. Put in mind that quality of studying is way better than the quantity you spend in studying. Press on.
