“I have no time to do it” and “I forgot” are two of the most popular excuses students give for not getting work done on time. To a certain degree their reasons can be valid. The root problem, however, lies in poor time management and in an ineffective working system that comes with misuse of time. Time is like water slipping through a sieve. You cannot stop it and it cannot be retrieved once it has already passed. However, you can use it wisely. Proper time management can make the hours work for you and not against you. Scheduling is an effective device for the profitable use of time. Here are some tips in scheduling and on how to use your time wisely. Prepare a monthly or semestral calendar. Make the calendar you made your “appointment register”. Buy or make one spacious enough to let you jot down a whole month’s activities and see them in a glance. At the proper dates fill in what papers, projects, and exams are due. Parties, dates, outings and other appointments should be noted as well. The calendar cues you to look ahead and plan for approaching events. It is good to be always reminded. Work out a daily schedule. This is a list of what you have to do and what you want to do on a particular day. Allot time for each listed activity. This will help you maximize the twenty-four hours you have each day. If you strictly adhere to this schedule, you will have done more at the end of the day. Block priorities. As a student, your priorities are your school requirements. All your class time, library time and study time should be non-negotiable and non-adjustable hours. Depending on your concentration discipline, spend longer hours in reviewing past lessons, reading ahead, and doing home works. Balance all priorities. As a balance diet leads to a healthy body, a balanced set or priorities leads to a sound mind and a pleasant personality. The key word in priorities is balance. Manage your time well so there are hours left for the enjoyment of other things. Turn time-wasters into time-savers. Make use of the in-between time. Utilize your vacant periods. Use the little but precious minutes to think through ideas, to ponder on a problem, to read through a lesson, to answer exercises, to memorize lines and formulas, to plan your term paper, and a thousand different things.

Keeping a schedule is tough. You will have to fight the temptation of putting of tasks and the temptation to procrastinate. For once you start deviating from your schedule; it will fall apart and become useless. Cultivate the discipline of saving time by sticking to your schedule.
