WisdomStudying 101: Interest- The Sustaining Base
There are basically two types of interest: natural and cultivated. To be naturally keen and interested on a subject is a blessing. On the other hand, to cultivate interest is wisdom and discipline. Without the sustaining base of interest, learning slows down, attention drops and excitement fades. Studying and learning become terribly dull, tiresome and monotonous with the absence of interest. For students, learning may even come to an abrupt end. Some may attend in class but still be mentally absent. Uninterested students have a high probability of churning out school requirements as scheduled and they also have the tendency to forget all the lessons as soon as the quizzes and exams are over. When interest is present, however, your filters of perceptions are open. Whether the topic is easy or not, whether the environment is conducive to learning or not and whether the time is convenient or not- those factors will not matter as long as you are interested in what you are about to learn for you have the inner motivation to learn and complete with what you begin. But just face it, no matter how you avoid it, there will always be subjects included in your curriculum that will not get your attention but take them also since they will broaden your outlook – of yourself, of others, and of the world around you. But how could you cultivate new interests? In order to do this, you should see the world with curiosity. Open your eyes and look around you with a searching and inquisitive mind and heart. Read, observe and inquire are the essentials. Discover the beauty and subtlety of language, communication and arts. Let the wonders that science and technology can accomplish amaze you. The dynamics of economics in industry and high finance is a challenge to decipher, so is the interaction of national and international politics. There are a wide variety of fields you can choose from but there will always be one thing you will always be passionate to do. Whether it be helping others, performing in front of a live audience, doing researches, cooking and others, just remember to always choose to do the things that you love, because that will be the only way you could be happy. As the famous Bollywood movie “The Three Idiots” says, “Make your passion your profession.”
