WisdomStudying 101: Listening- A Rewarding Skill
Many people can hear and yet are deaf. Many can hear and yet do not understand. It is sad to think that hearing people have not made the best use of their ears. There is a difference between hearing and listening. Hearing is a faculty, listening is a discipline. Hearing is physical while listening is mental. Good listening demands concentration and active mental participation. Active listening evaluates what the sound waves mean and what the words really convey. It puts the bits and pieces of information together and makes sense of the words which were heard. Active listening in a classroom setting screens and sifts the relevant from the irrelevant, the right from the wrong, the true from the false and the beautiful from the ugly. True listening is a neglected skill however, with steady training and constant practice a student could sharpen and develop listening habits. Here are some tips to make your listening skill better. Read the lesson beforehand. It is always a plus to have background information to enrich your comprehension of the lecture. Advance readings are your spotlight to the substance and insights of the lesson and it will give you a more complete grasp of the subject matter under discussion. Deal with distractions. You can never have a complete silent atmosphere when you are listening because in one way or another, there will be disturbances popping out. Whether it is a noisy ambiance in the corridor, a talkative seatmate or a beeping cell phone, take no notice of them since they are not essential for your listening. Concentrate. If you have a choice, grab the opportunity to seat at the chair nearest to the teacher or lecturer. The nearer you are from the source of message, the more intense your concentration will be. It will not just make you concentrate more, it hinders you also to make unnecessary actions since you could be easily noticed when you are seated in the front. Take down notes. Face the fact that not all that you’ve heard will be stuck in your mind. You will lose some of the information which might be critical to your learning. Always have a pen and paper and take down the important details of the discussion. Note taking strengthens your concentration and listening skills as well.
Remember that true listening applies even outside the classroom. Learn to enhance this skill as poor listening habits leads to lessons not learned, messages not understood, scarred relationships and opportunities wasted. Don’t waste time in hearing something, listen to it instead.
