The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines beauty as “the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit”. In order to be beautiful, people have come up with different ways of body adornment. I have learned from my college professor before that body adornment is “anything added to decorate and embellish the body which changes how one presents himself and enhances his appearance, and which can be done to describe cultural values and to change society’s perception of himself”. In this article, I want to share some of the ways of body adornment which I have learned from her. Foot Binding – Beginning in the 10th century and ending in the early 20th century, it has been a practice on young girls and women in China wherein their feet would be released after initial binding which has left less severe deformities. Their tiny feet symbolize a wealthy and well-born woman. Body Scarring – In Africa, history tells that it is an ancient African tribal body art involving scarring purposely the skin to create raised marks and complete patterns. It symbolizes beauty, strength and courage, fertility, family pride, and protection from death. Neck Rings – Padaung, a tribal group in Myanmar, has a practice of neck-stretching as an expression of feminine beauty. Also, the number and value of the neck rings give status and respect on the wearer’s family. Lip Discs – It is a practice among the Surma and Mursi people wherein increasingly larger discs are inserted into a pierced hole in either the upper or lower lip, or both, in so doing stretching it. Tattooing – As a form of self-expression and identification, it involves a marking made by placing pigment into the skin’s dermis which is later dispersed throughout a homogenized damaged layer down through the epidermis and upper dermis.

Honestly, learning these five ways has really amazed me especially the second down to the fourth. But still, I know that there are still a lot more ways to adorn the body. However, what is important is that people would not forget that inner beauty is more important than these things. As the quote by Kahlil Gibran says, “Beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the HEART.”
